On the eve of his trip back to Yemen in a decade, Red (Radfan Alqirsh) must prepare, physically and psychologically, for his flight. The inconsequential routine of the morning shave becomes a ritual of fear and paranoia, with Red observing the politics of “White Time”; the act of playing down one’s ethnicity in dress and demeanor in order to avoid harassment at the hands of authority. Reflecting on his childhood, notions of masculinity, and the burgeoning of the “Arab Spring” and “Occupy” movements, Red confronts the political implications of a constructed identity.
